Cape Verde struck a series of euro-cent pattern coins in 2004 exploring potential eurozone integration — a monetary alignment that never materialized. The country retained the Cape Verdean escudo, pegged to the euro through a long-standing agreement with Portugal, making full adoption economically unnecessary.
