| Beschrijving keerzijde | Central field bears a detailed bust portrait of the ancient Greek astronomer Aristarchos of Samos, depicted as a mature bearded man with curly hair in a classical sculptural style, facing slightly left. The portrait is framed by a decorative Greek meander border encircling the inner field. The curved legend ΑΡΙΣΤΑΡΧΟΣ Ο ΣΑΜΙΟΣ 310 – 230 π.Χ. (Aristarchus of Samos, 310–230 BC) arcs along the upper portion of the meander border. Aristarchos proposed a heliocentric model of the solar system in the 3rd century BC — roughly 1,800 years before Copernicus advanced the same argument. His original text on the subject is lost; what survives comes almost entirely through a secondhand account in Archimedes' The Sand Reckoner, which preserved just enough to confirm how far ahead of his contemporaries he actually was.
