The first-series euro notes were issued simultaneously across twelve countries on 1 January 2002 — the largest currency changeover in history by number of notes. Robert Kalina, an Austrian Oesterreichische Nationalbank designer, won the ECB's 1996 design competition; his winning concept used architectural motifs deliberately stripped of national identity, a political requirement that ruled out any real European building.
Production was decentralized across multiple national printers, each responsible for a share of the total output. Notes can be attributed to their printing facility by the serial number prefix — Greek-printed examples carry the prefix Y, while Bundesdruckerei output runs under the X series.
