10 Euro 1947 Dodecanese Islands

Greece issued this coin in 2021 to mark the 74th anniversary of the Dodecanese Islands' union with the Greek state — a delayed reunion long complicated by Italian colonial rule, which had held the archipelago since the 1912 Italo-Turkish War. The formal cession from Italy came only after World War II, with the Paris Peace Treaties of 1947 transferring sovereignty. Rhodes and its neighboring islands had been Greek-majority for centuries but remained administratively severed from the modern Greek state for its entire first hundred years of existence.
