Part of the Bank of Greece's long-running "Regions of Greece" series, this issue commemorates Epirus, the mountainous northwestern region whose ancient oracle at Dodona predates Delphi as a Panhellenic sanctuary. Epirus also gave its name to a peculiar entry in military vocabulary — the Pyrrhic victory — after its king Pyrrhus of Epirus defeated Rome at Heraclea in 280 BC at a cost so catastrophic he reportedly told his generals one more such victory would finish him entirely.
