Beschrijving keerzijde Central device consists of the Portuguese armillary sphere, its meridian ring bearing the Portuguese royal shield with the characteristic five escutcheons and bezants, set against a cross of the Order of Christ. The circular legend REPÚBLICA PORTUGUESA runs along the upper and lateral periphery, with the date 1953 placed in the exergue flanked by two pellets. The word PROVA (proof/pattern) appears in the left field adjacent to the sphere, identifying this piece as a pattern strike. A beaded inner border encircles the entire design.

Aanvullende informatie

Prova pieces from Casa da Moeda in this period were produced in extremely limited numbers for official approval — typically fewer than a dozen examples — before the type was either adopted or rejected for circulation. The 1953 10 Escudos prova precedes the circulation issue of the same year, which itself was struck during Salazar's Estado Novo regime at a moment when Portugal was quietly navigating Cold War-era economic pressures while maintaining formal neutrality.
