| Obverse description | Central design features a Portuguese caravel (sailing ship) facing right, its sails fully billowed, rendered in fine relief against a background of radiating navigational lines and a stylised armillary sphere to the right. The Portuguese national flag is depicted at the masthead. The circular legend 'REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA' runs around the periphery, with the letters separated by dots and flanked by star ornaments. The date 1961 appears in the lower portion of the legend, also letter-spaced with dot separators. Designer and engraver attributions 'M. NORTE SCULP MARTINS BARATA DEL.' are incused in small lettering in the lower field. |
