Eduardo Mondlane was Mozambican, not Cape Verdean — his appearance on a Cape Verde coin reflects the pan-African solidarity ideology that bound the PAIGC liberation movement across Lusophone Africa. Mondlane founded FRELIMO in 1962 and was assassinated by a parcel bomb in Dar es Salaam in February 1969, eight years before this coin entered circulation. Cape Verde, independent only since 1975, was still governed by the PAIGC alongside Guinea-Bissau during the issue years, and the shared political heroes of that movement appeared on coinage from both territories.
The union between Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau collapsed after the 1980 Bissau coup, which likely explains why this series was not continued beyond 1982.
