| Obverse description | The national arms of Cape Verde — a circular emblem inscribed with the motto TRABALHO PROGRESSO UNIDADE, featuring a star, an open book, and a stylised flower at centre — is displayed in the upper field, flanked by two branches of maize and grain forming a wreath and surmounted by a scallop shell at base. The large denomination numeral '10' and the legend 'ESCUDOS' appear prominently in the lower central field, with the date below. The circular legend 'REPUBLICA DE CABO VERDE' runs along the left and right periphery. |

Eduardo Mondlane was Mozambican, not Cape Verdean — his appearance on a Cape Verde coin reflects the pan-African solidarity ideology that bound the PAIGC liberation movement across Lusophone Africa. Mondlane founded FRELIMO in 1962 and was assassinated by a parcel bomb in Dar es Salaam in February 1969, eight years before this coin entered circulation. Cape Verde, independent only since 1975, was still governed by the PAIGC alongside Guinea-Bissau during the issue years, and the shared political heroes of that movement appeared on coinage from both territories.
The union between Cape Verde and Guinea-Bissau collapsed after the 1980 Bissau coup, which likely explains why this series was not continued beyond 1982.
