Obverse description The Portuguese national coat of arms occupies the central field, depicting the traditional shield bearing five bezants arranged in a cross on a blue field, surrounded by seven castles on a red border, all set within a heraldic mantling. Above the shield, the emblem of the Portuguese Republic — a naval armillary sphere entwined with a rope in an ornamental knot — is prominently displayed. The circular legend REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA arcs around the periphery, with the date 1987 appearing to the left in the field, separated by small decorative floral stops.
