Chile's shift from Pesos to Escudos in 1960 was a redenomination at a ratio of 1000:1, a frank acknowledgment of how badly inflation had eroded the old currency. The Escudo was itself eventually replaced by the Peso in 1975 — again at 1000:1 — meaning the full cycle of collapse and reset took roughly fifteen years.

Three signature combinations appear across the series, tracking the succession of Central Bank presidents and finance ministers through a turbulent stretch of Chilean economic policy. Carlos Massad Abud, whose name appears on the latest issues, later became a prominent figure in Latin American monetary economics well beyond his tenure here.
