Obverse description Crowned and draped bust of Emperor Charles V (Karel V) facing right, rendered in the style of a Renaissance portrait medallion. The effigy occupies the central field, with the sovereign shown in regal attire beneath a jewelled crown. A circular Latin legend surrounds the portrait reading CAROLUS D G ROM IMP HISP REX DVX BURGC F, identifying him as Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain. The design draws on historical coinage of the Habsburg Netherlands. Engraved by Paul Huybrechts and Fernand Brose.
