Additional information

Apafi ruled Transylvania as an Ottoman vassal from 1661, installed by the Porte after the disastrous Battle of Gyulafehérvár. His multi-ducat gold pieces were struck primarily as presentation coins — diplomatic gifts and rewards rather than circulating currency. A 10-ducat piece in 1681 was produced against a backdrop of acute regional pressure: that year, Imre Thököly's anti-Habsburg uprising in Upper Hungary was drawing Ottoman support and reshuffling every political alliance in the region, with Apafi navigating carefully between Constantinople and Vienna.

Fr#452 is among the rarer Apafi multiples. Surviving examples are almost exclusively in cabinet condition precisely because they never circulated.
