Apafi was installed as Prince of Transylvania in 1661 under direct Ottoman pressure — he was, by most accounts, a reluctant ruler chosen precisely because he posed no threat. This ten-ducat piece was struck in his first full year of reign, when his authority depended entirely on continued Ottoman favor following the catastrophic Battle of Nagyszőlős, which had eliminated his predecessor János Kemény.
Multiple-ducat presentation strikes of this type functioned as diplomatic gifts and rewards rather than circulating currency. Resch lists only a handful of die combinations for this denomination across Apafi's reign.
