Additional information

The Teutonic Order by 1613 was a shadow of the military force that had once dominated the Baltic. Stripped of Prussia in 1525 when Grand Master Albrecht of Brandenburg-Ansbach converted to Lutheranism and secularized the territory as a duchy, the Order retreated to its remaining holdings in the Holy Roman Empire under Habsburg protection. This piece was struck under Archduke Maximilian III, who served as Administrator of the Order from 1590 and was elected Grand Master in 1603 — a political appointment as much as a religious one, cementing Habsburg influence over what remained of the institution.

Pattern status suggests this ten-ducat piece was likely a presentation strike rather than a circulation issue, produced to demonstrate engraving quality or court favor.
