Leopold Wilhelm of Habsburg served as Bishop of Olomouc from 1637 until his death in 1662, though he governed the see largely through deputies — he simultaneously held the Archbishopric of Magdeburg, the Bishopric of Strasbourg, the Bishopric of Halberstadt, and the Governor-Generalship of the Spanish Netherlands, among other positions. The multi-ducat issues struck under his name were prestige pieces, almost certainly minted for presentation and diplomatic gift-giving rather than any commercial function.
The three-year striking window of 1656–1658 coincides with the final phase of the Northern Wars in Poland, a period when Habsburg diplomatic activity in Central Europe was unusually intense.
