The Schlick family's Joachimsthal mines gave the Western world its word for "dollar" — the Joachimsthaler, struck beginning in 1520, was abbreviated over centuries into the term still in use today. By 1634, the family's mining wealth had collapsed under the pressures of the Thirty Years' War, Bohemian political upheaval, and Habsburg confiscations following the Battle of White Mountain. This 10-ducat piece was struck in the final phase of Schlick coinage authority, when such heavy gold multiples functioned more as presentations or wealth stores than as circulating currency.
KM#18 is a rare survivor from a dynasty already in terminal decline.
