Christian IV was only fourteen in 1591, not yet crowned — Denmark was still under the regency of four high noblemen following Frederick II's death in 1588. These large multiple-ducat pieces were almost certainly struck for presentation and ceremonial purposes rather than circulation, a practice common at the Danish court for diplomatic gifts and royal largesse. At ten ducats' weight in gold, they were never meant to pass through a merchant's hands.
Freise 62 is among the rarest of the Christian IV gold issues. The 1591–92 window is narrow, and surviving examples are few.
