Charles Ferdinand Vasa, Bishop of Breslau from 1625, was also Bishop of Płock and a Polish prince of the blood — the younger brother of Władysław IV of Poland. His tenure coincided with the Thirty Years' War tearing through Silesia, and the Bishopric's large gold multiples of this period functioned less as currency than as diplomatic gifts and display pieces for a prince-bishop operating simultaneously in ecclesiastical and dynastic politics. The 1642 date places this piece three years before the Peace of Westphalia, when Silesia's confessional future was still genuinely unresolved.
Ten-ducat pieces of this issue are among the rarest Silesian ecclesiastical strikes of the century. Führer und Siegel records the type, but surviving examples appear at auction perhaps once per decade.
