The "Aureus Magnus" series issued by the Lübeck mint in the 1950s occupied a peculiar corner of West German numismatic production — neither legal tender nor straightforward bullion, but rather restrike medallic gold aimed squarely at collectors and investors rebuilding wealth in the postwar Deutsche Mark economy. Lübeck's status as a historically independent Hanseatic city gave the pieces a municipal prestige that pure bullion lacked.
