Aureus Magnus was a West German private bullion producer active in the 1970s that issued a series of large-format gold pieces under the "Aureus Magnus" name, deliberately evoking Roman imperial coinage. These were not legal tender and carried no state authority — produced squarely for the collector and bullion markets during a period when private gold ownership had been restored in the United States only two years earlier, in 1974, driving significant speculative demand for non-sovereign gold.
Hans Sachs, the Nuremberg cobbler-poet of the 16th century, was a recurring subject in German commemorative issues partly because of Wagner's 1868 opera Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, which cemented his popular image.
