The "Germania Aeterna" series was produced by the firm of Berna in the early 1960s as a privately minted bullion piece rather than an official state issue — the Federal Republic of Germany issued no gold coinage of its own during this period, a direct consequence of Bretton Woods obligations and postwar monetary restrictions.
