The "Aureus Magnus" series was a West German private medal coinage of the late 1950s, struck in high-fineness gold for the collector and bullion market rather than for any monetary purpose. These pieces circulated among European coin dealers and were marketed to buyers seeking gold in a period when direct bullion ownership remained legally complicated in several Western countries following postwar currency controls.
The Nefertiti subject drew on the enormous popular visibility of the painted limestone bust held in the Ägyptisches Museum in West Berlin — itself a politically charged object, since Egypt had been demanding its repatriation since the 1920s.
