| Reverse description | Four elaborately rendered heraldic shields arranged in a cruciform composition, united by ornate Baroque scrollwork and cartouche borders. The upper shield displays the Venetian lion of St. Mark; the left shield bears the three saltire crosses of Amsterdam; the right shield depicts the fortified gateway of Hamburg; and the lower shield shows the Imperial eagle of Nuremberg. A cherub's head with wings crowns the arrangement at the top, and floral and foliate decorative elements fill the interstices between the shields. The circumferential Latin legend commemorates the founding of the great banking institutions of Europe in 1689, with the mint master's initials B and M separated by a rosette at the base. |
