Greece returned to civilian rule in 1974 after seven years of military junta, and the coinage of this period reflects the transitional politics of the new republic. The "old lettering" designation distinguishes this type from a later restyled issue — the script change was modest but deliberate, part of a broader standardization of Greek official typography under the restored democratic government. Production ran through the final years of the Athens mint's adjustment to peacetime civilian oversight.
