The Royal Australian Mint, along with several private minting houses, produced Chinese lunar series pieces under Pacific island authority during this period as a way to circumvent direct competition with established national mint programs.
The snake is the sixth animal in the Chinese zodiac cycle. 2013 was the Year of the Water Snake specifically, a distinction some issues in this series note and others omit.
