Singapore's lunar series launched in 1981 with the Year of the Rooster, making this 1984 Rat issue the fourth in the sequence and the first time the twelve-year cycle had reached the animal most associated with resourcefulness in Hokkien and Teochew communities — the dominant dialect groups among Singapore's ethnic Chinese majority at independence. The .500 fineness was a deliberate production choice that distinguished these coins from the finer issues that would come later in the series.
