Singapore's lunar new year commemorative series has been issued annually since 1967, making it one of the longest-running such programs in Southeast Asia. The 1999 rabbit issue falls mid-series, during a year when the regional economy was still reeling from the Asian financial crisis that had gutted currencies and markets across the continent — though Singapore's tightly managed monetary policy insulated it considerably from the worst effects.
