Singapore's lunar new year coin program has run continuously since 1967, but the 1992 Monkey issue falls within a transitional period when the Monetary Authority was still calibrating the series' mintage levels against collector demand — resulting in figures that proved lower than several adjacent years in the cycle. The Monkey occupies the ninth position in the twelve-year zodiac rotation, and 1992 marked Singapore's third time issuing a Monkey year coin since the program's inception.
