Singapore's lunar new year commemorative series launched with the 1982 Year of the Dog issue, the first in what would become a long-running program under the Monetary Authority of Singapore. The nickel composition was chosen deliberately for this inaugural piece before the series later migrated to silver and other formats for subsequent animal cycle issues.
1982 marked Singapore's eighteenth year of independence, a period when the government was aggressively using coinage programs to assert national identity and generate numismatic revenue — a significant secondary income stream for the MAS during this decade.
