The USS Missouri (BB-63) earned her most consequential hour not in battle but at anchor — it was on her deck in Tokyo Bay on September 2, 1945, that Japan's formal surrender was signed, ending the Second World War. Palau's commemorative issues from this period frequently target the Pacific Theater, a deliberate choice given the islands' own brutal wartime history under Japanese occupation and subsequent American liberation in 1944.
