The University of the West Indies was founded in 1948 as a college of the University of London, achieving independent university status in 1962 — the same year Jamaica gained independence. Belize, then British Honduras, maintained close ties to the UWI system despite not becoming independent itself until 1981, and the Belize City-based program long served as the primary route to higher education for Belizeans who couldn't afford passage to Mona or Cave Hill.
This issue marks the institution's 50th anniversary. The specification matches the standard Commonwealth commemorative format used widely in the 1990s, with most such pieces struck by the Royal Mint or the Pobjoy Mint on contract.
