Liberia's Central Bank issued a long run of commemorative silver pieces throughout the late 1990s and 2000s, many with no meaningful connection to Liberian history — this is one of them. The coins were produced under licensing arrangements with foreign distributors, primarily targeting the collector novelty market in Europe and North America rather than circulating within Liberia itself.
The Titanic sank in April 1912; the wreck was located by Robert Ballard's expedition in September 1985. The "Expedition 2000" framing likely references the series of deep-sea recovery dives conducted by RMS Titanic Inc. around the turn of the millennium, during which thousands of artifacts were raised from the debris field — operations that drew sustained legal and ethical controversy from maritime preservation groups.
