Sierra Leone's 2001 wildlife series was produced by the Pobjoy Mint under license, part of a broader strategy by smaller Commonwealth nations to generate foreign exchange through collector coinage rather than domestic monetary need. These pieces never meaningfully circulated — struck purely for the philatelic and numismatic market, they were distributed almost entirely through overseas dealers and direct mail.
KM#247.1 denotes the standard issue; a .999 fine gold variant and a colored enamel version were produced concurrently under the same series umbrella.
