This coin inaugurated the First Spouse Gold Bullion series, which Congress authorized under the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005. Because Jefferson was a widower during his presidency — Martha having died in 1782, nearly two decades before he took office — the Mint had no historical first lady to depict, and instead issued a "Liberty" design for his slot in the series.
The series was the first U.S. bullion coinage struck in .9999 fine gold, a purity step above the American Gold Eagle's .9167.
