Liberia's habit of issuing gold collector pieces themed around foreign sports teams peaked in the mid-2000s, with the Dutch football squad among dozens of national teams licensed across multiple denominations. These were produced almost entirely for the European souvenir and collector market, never intended for circulation in Liberia itself, where the Liberian dollar had been in chronic shortage of even base-metal coinage following years of civil conflict.
