Liberia's dollar-denominated collector issues of this period were produced almost entirely for the export novelty market — not for domestic circulation — by private minting contractors, primarily in the United States and Europe. The country was in the middle of post-civil war economic collapse in 2000, with the Liberian dollar effectively worthless in daily trade and the US dollar functioning as the de facto currency instead.
