The Marshall Islands issued a long run of commemorative brass dollars throughout the 1990s targeting the thematic collector market, and this SNCF 232 U1 piece falls squarely in that program. The 232 U1 was a French compound locomotive class introduced in the 1930s, built by several manufacturers for express passenger service on the Réseau Ferré national network before the SNCF consolidation of 1938 unified France's six private railway companies under a single state operator.
These Marshall Islands issues were never intended for circulation and were sold directly to collectors through overseas distributors.
