Sierra Leone has issued a long-running series of commemorative silver and base-metal pieces through third-party licensing arrangements, most produced by the Pobjoy Mint in Surrey. This particular issue marks Queen Elizabeth II's annual Christmas broadcast, a tradition begun by her grandfather George V on radio in 1932 and continued by Elizabeth herself without interruption from 1952 until her death in 2022 — she skipped only 1969 by choice.
The "a" suffix in the KM reference distinguishes the silver striking from a companion cupro-nickel issue.
