The Simla Agreement of July 1972 was signed by Indira Gandhi and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto in the aftermath of the Bangladesh Liberation War, during which Pakistan had surrendered over 90,000 troops — the largest military capitulation since World War II. The accord committed both nations to resolving disputes bilaterally, a clause Pakistan would later cite to resist international mediation over Kashmir.
Liberia's commemorative program of the 2000s issued dozens of these copper-nickel pieces under licensing arrangements targeting thematic collectors rather than domestic circulation. This coin never saw a Liberian pocket.
