Obverse description Central field features the Liberian coat of arms depicting a sailing ship on open waters, a palm tree, a rising sun, a dove in flight, and a crossed plough and spade in the lower portion, all within a quartered shield surmounted by a ribbon cartouche bearing the national motto. The legend REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA arcs along the upper periphery, with a secondary legend THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE inscribed on the motto ribbon within the arms. The date 2005 is divided by the shield, with '20' at lower left and '05' at lower right. A repeated legend REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA appears in a straight baseline panel at the bottom of the design.

Additional information

Liberia's prolific early-2000s sports commemorative program was essentially a commercial licensing operation — coins were designed, marketed, and distributed by private numismatic companies using Liberia's issuing authority as a vehicle, with little to no involvement from the depicted nations. This piece, timed to the 2006 FIFA World Cup cycle, is one of dozens of near-identical issues produced in the same specifications for competing national squads.

Silver-plated copper strikes of this type were produced in large quantities and sold primarily through European and American coin dealers at significant premiums over melt value.
