| 裏面の説明 | The central field presents a detailed depiction of the Santa Maria, Christopher Columbus's flagship caravel, shown under full sail upon stylised waves. The vessel is rendered with fine rigging detail, billowing sails bearing crosses, and pennants at the mastheads. Stars are scattered across the field above the ship. The legend REACHING FOR THE NEW WORLD arcs along the upper border, flanked by small five-pointed stars, with the commemorative dates 1492 and 1992 positioned at the lower left and right respectively. The ship's name SANTA MARIA appears in the lower field above the denomination TEN DOLLARS, which is inscribed along the bottom margin. The mint mark R appears below the ship. |

Issued to mark the quincentenary of Columbus's 1492 voyage, this piece was part of a broader Marshall Islands commemorative program that flooded the market throughout the early 1990s. The Republic of the Marshall Islands had no domestic coin circulation to speak of — these were produced purely for the collector trade, struck by foreign mints under contract and never intended to pass through anyone's hands as currency.
The commemorative glut of the Columbus quincentenary depressed secondary market values almost immediately after issue.
