Liberia's practice of issuing commemorative silver dollars featuring international sports and celebrity figures was a deliberate hard-currency revenue strategy throughout the 1990s, with the coins sold almost exclusively to collectors abroad rather than circulating domestically. This piece honoring Barrichello appeared during his early years at Jordan-Hart, before his long tenure at Ferrari made him one of Formula One's most recognized figures.
None of these issues were intended for Liberian commerce. The country was in the grip of a civil war that had effectively destroyed its banking infrastructure.
