The national motto UNITY FREEDOM JUSTICE appears incuse on a ribbon below the shield. The legend REPUBLIC OF SIERRA LEONE arcs above, and the date 1999 is inscribed along the lower rim. The Pobjoy Mint mark PM appears to the lower left of the arms. |

This piece belongs to the wave of commemorative issues produced in anticipation of the April 1999 wedding of Prince Edward and Sophie Rhys-Jones — a union that prompted the Queen to grant the couple the titles Earl and Countess of Wessex rather than the expected Duke and Duchess, a deliberate departure from modern royal convention. Sierra Leone's participation in the commemorative market was largely brokerage-driven, with the Pobjoy Mint handling production for numerous Caribbean and African issuing authorities simultaneously.
