Jamaica issued this coin to commemorate Queen Elizabeth II's 1983 royal visit, one of several Caribbean stops on a tour that also marked the island's 21st anniversary of independence. The Bank of Jamaica had by this point established a pattern of silver commemoratives tied to royal occasions, a practice that generated foreign exchange through collector sales rather than domestic circulation.
Few of these pieces ever passed through Jamaican hands as currency.
