The rock hyrax — Procavia capensis — is among the more biologically improbable animals to appear on a national coinage. Despite weighing under five kilograms, its closest living relatives are elephants and manatees, a fact confirmed by fossil evidence and genetic sequencing that consistently baffles anyone encountering it for the first time. Namibia has issued a long-running wildlife series through the Bank of Namibia, using silver bullion coins partly to attract international collector markets that the country's limited domestic economy cannot sustain alone.
