Palau's glass-inlay coinage program, which began in the early 2000s, was among the first in the world to embed actual colored glass into a bullion-weight silver ring — a technique developed in cooperation with European minting partners to satisfy collector demand for novel formats at a time when the commemorative coin market was aggressively expanding. The Republic of Palau, a nation of roughly 20,000 people with no domestic mint, licenses its numismatic program almost entirely to foreign producers, predominantly in Austria and Germany.
