Palau has operated a prolific commemorative coin program since the 1990s, largely administered through external minting and marketing agencies rather than domestic monetary infrastructure — the republic has no central bank in the conventional sense and uses the U.S. dollar for everyday transactions. Most issues in this program are struck in limited quantities and sold directly to collectors abroad, never entering circulation on the islands themselves.

The rainforest series targets the growing market for environmentally themed numismatic pieces, a category that expanded sharply in the 2010s among European collector demographics.
