Struck as part of a wave of commemorative issues released in the years following Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother's 100th birthday in 2000, this piece belongs to a broader licensing arrangement that saw Sierra Leone's name attached to dozens of collector-market coins with no meaningful connection to the country itself. The Bank of Sierra Leone issued these almost exclusively for the European and North American collector trade.
The Queen Mother died in March 2002 at the age of 101, making same-year issues like this one effectively posthumous releases.
