Obverse description The arms of the Republic of Liberia are depicted at center, featuring a shield with a sailing ship, palm tree, and rising sun, surmounted by a dove in flight, with a ploughman and motto scroll at the base. The national motto 'THE LOVE OF LIBERTY BROUGHT US HERE' curves along the inner border of the shield. The legend 'REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA' arcs along the upper field, and is repeated in a ribbon-style banner at the base of the arms. The date '2003' is divided by the shield, with '20' to the left and '03' to the right. A beaded border frames the entire design.

Additional information

Liberia's papal issues from this period were produced almost entirely for the collector market — the country had no meaningful silver coinage tradition and was still recovering from fourteen years of intermittent civil war when this piece was struck. The licensing of foreign religious and commemorative subjects was a reliable hard-currency revenue stream for the Liberian government throughout the late 1990s and early 2000s.

John Paul II died in April 2005, roughly two years after this coin's issue date, making it a late-reign piece struck while he was already in visible physical decline from Parkinson's disease.
